Frequently Asked Questions about NPL’s Elevator Repair
Why are you repairing the elevator?
The elevator upgrade at the Newburyport Public Library (NPL) is necessary to ensure compliance with state safety codes. In December 2024, the City worked with the contractor to issues permits to start this project and the contractor now has the need materials to complete the project.
If I can’t use the stairs, can I still do archival research?
Yes. A librarian will conduct a brief interview and we will arrange a time to have the research materials available in the director’s room.
Without the elevator, how can I print?
Please stop by the first floor circulation desk and they will contact a staff person to assist you. We also have the ability to print wirelessly, described below. Once the print job has been sent, a staff person will fetch the paperwork and bring it to the first floor. Payment can be made at the first floor desk.

- If you haven’t saved your file, make sure to do so
- Select “black & white” or “color” printing & how many copies you would like to print
- Check box for “Accept Terms & Conditions” and press “Continue” to proceed
- Enter an email address
- The address will be needed to release your print job
- Once your print job says “Ready,” head to the printer & enter in your email address to release your print job
- Please pay at the desk

PREVIEW JOBS BEFORE PRINTING. Users will be asked to pay for all printouts due to paper and toner expense to library.
Starting January 1st, the cost for printing and copying will increase by 5¢ due to the cost of upkeep and supplies. Black and white will be 20¢/page and color will be 40¢/page. We appreciate your understanding.
I can’t use the stairs. What if I need tech help?
Technology assistance will be provided on an as needed basis in the reading room. Please check with staff at the first floor desk to inquire about staff availability.
How can I browse books without using the elevator?
The first floor titles will remain accessible. Upon request, staff can gather items from the second and third floor. You can also contact the library prior to your visit and, depending on staff availability, we will make every effort to get the title for you. Throughout the month, staff will make an effort to add additional titles for browsing.

Does the library have wireless internet (wi-fi) access?
Yes! The Library provides free open wireless Internet (wi-fi) access throughout the building on a public network [NPL Open] — no password required.
I need an elevator to access the study rooms. What do I do now?
Unfortunately, public PCs on the second floor will only be accessible via the stairs. We can provide you with information on local PC internet access at area libraries which are accessible. You can request this information by calling the Reference Desk at 978-465-4428 or emailing info@newburyportpl.org
Is the Book Sale still happening?
Yes, the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library are able to run the Great Old Book Sale. Donations begin Saturday, March 22, 2025.
Thankfully, their operations are not impacted by the elevator repairs.
Does the library have a fax machine?
Yes, please check with the first floor desk and we will arrange for a librarian to assist you. Toll-free and continental U.S. destination outgoing fax services are supported by the library on an as-available basis. The cost is $1 per page, excluding the cover sheet.
